REPUBLIC OF KIRIBATI
Fanning Island lies 228 nautical miles north of the equator. It is about 153 miles northwest of Christmas, and approximately 1200 miles south of Hawaii. It took us a full day and night to get there. Fanning is an atoll, which is what is left over after a volcano sinks. It is inhabited by gentle people who have not seen much of the outside world. |
